OpenATV, OpenPLi or VTI: which Enigma2 image for cardsharing?

The image on your receiver matters less than people think, but it does decide how easily you install a softcam. A practical comparison for anyone running a CCcam or OScam line.

Ask which Enigma2 image is best for cardsharing and you will get strong opinions. The honest answer is that it matters less than the debate suggests. Every mainstream image runs both CCcam and OScam, and your line does not know or care which one you chose. What the image actually decides is how much work it takes to get a softcam installed and how many guides exist for your exact situation.

What the image actually changes

Three things, and none of them is picture quality.

• Whether a softcam is already there. Some images ship with CCcam or OScam available immediately. Others expect you to add a feed first.
• Where the config files live. CCcam.cfg might be in /etc, /var/etc or /usr/keys depending on the image, which is why guides list several paths.
• How much help you will find. The more common the image, the more likely someone has already written up your exact box and your exact error.

Zapping speed, freezing and channels that will not open come from your connection and the server, not from the image. If channels are slow to open, the number to look at is ECM time, not the firmware version.

OpenATV

The default recommendation, and the one most people should take. The softcam feed is the widest, installing CCcam or OScam is a few clicks in the plugin menu, and the overwhelming majority of setup guides on the internet assume you are running it. That last point is worth more than any feature comparison when something goes wrong at eleven at night. Our OpenATV setup page has the exact steps.

OpenPLi

Leaner and more conservative, with a reputation for stability that is largely deserved. It ships with less, which some people prefer and others find frustrating, and you will typically add the softcam feed yourself. If you like a tidy box and are comfortable installing things, it is an excellent choice. The OpenPLi steps differ only slightly.

VTI and BlackHole

Both are solid, both run a line without complaint, and both have smaller communities than the two above. VTI is popular on Vu+ hardware in particular and its softcam manager is genuinely pleasant to use. The only real caution is that when you search for a specific error you will find fewer answers, so they suit people who are already confident rather than someone setting up their first box.

DreamOS is the actual exception

This is the one worth planning for. Newer Dreamboxes run DreamOS rather than a conventional Enigma2 image, and softcam installation and management work differently enough that a generic guide will send you down the wrong path. Nothing about the line changes, and it works perfectly well, but follow instructions written for it, such as our DreamOS page, rather than adapting an OpenATV guide as you go.

Do not reflash without a reason

If your box already runs any of the images above, you are done. Reflashing is not a fix for freezing, slow channel opening or a line that will not connect, and people lose whole evenings to it. Those symptoms have their own field guide, and the cause is almost never the image.

The one case for reflashing is stock manufacturer firmware that will not let you install a softcam at all. Then you have no choice, and OpenATV is the path of least resistance.
